1. up Preposition

(a) (=on or at the top of) en haut de, sur; ~ a ladder en haut d'une échelle; to go/come ~ the hill grimper la colline; to go/come/drive/walk ~ the street monter la rue; to go/come ~ the stairs monter l'escalier

2. up Adverb

(a) (=not lying down) debout; to be ~ être debout; to be early/late ~ se lever tôt/tard; to stay ~ late =se coucher tard; to be ~ all night passer une nuit blanche, ne pas dormir (or) se coucher toute la nuit
(b) (of number, price etc) en hausse; to be ~ être en hausse, avoir monté; five Euros/per cent ~ en hausse de 5 euros/pour cent; (Finance) to close 10 points ~ terminer en ~ de 10 points
(c) (of tent: assembled) monté, (of building) construit; (=in the air: of balloon etc) en l'air; (=on the wall) accroché, posé, (mis) sur le mur; to put a painting ~ poser un tableau, mettre un tableau sur le mur; have you got the curtains ~ in the bedroom yet? est-ce que vous avez déjà posé les rideaux dans la chambre?; ~ there là-haut
(d) if up comes before another preposition, if it really indicates "height", you could add là-haut ~ in the sky (là-hait) dans le ciel; ~ in the tree dans l'arbre; he was sitting with his back ~ against the wall il était assis le dos contre le mur
(e) if up comes after a verb, it's usually best to look up the verb; but here are some common examples of verb up to go/come/fly ~ monter; to climb ~ grimper; to stand ~ se lever; to sit ~ (when lying down) s'asseoir, (when already half sitting up); se redresser; sit ~ straight! redresse-toi!
(f) if up indicates arriving at a place, you can often use the verb s'approcher, or simply arriver to come ~ to sb, to walk ~ to sb s'approcher de qn; they drove ~ to the house (arrivés en voiture), ils se sont approchés de la maison; to run ~ (to), to rush ~ (to) accourir (à); ~ as far as jusqu'à; I'll take you ~ as far as the river je t'accompagne jusqu'à la rivière
(g) sometimes the translation is arbitrary and you really do just have to look up the verb to sign ~ to sth s'inscrire à qch, s'abonner à qch; to be fed ~ with sth en avoir marre de qch
(h) to be ~ for sth être partant pour qch; to be ~ to sth (=capable) être capable de faire qch; (=well enough) être en état de faire qch; (Infml, pej) what are you ~ to? qu'est-ce que tu fabriques?; (Infml) what have you been ~ to lately? qu'est-ce que tu deviens?
(i) to be ~ to sb =être la responsabilité de qn, être la décision de qn, être décidé par qn; it's not ~ to me ce n'est pas moi qui décide

3. up Noun

(usually plural) haut m; to have (one's) ~s and downs connaître des hauts et des bas
