Does the word redite really mean "needless repetition"?

Some controversy seems to have emerged from the translation of "needless repetition" suggested below for the word redite. So I just wanted to clarify that I do believe this is a fair transaltion of the word, although other translations (e.g. "redundancy" or even "rehash" as occurs in one example from the Europarl corpus) are surely possible depending on the context. Larousse, Dictionnaire des noms communs, for example, glosses redite as Répétition inutile.

Here are some other examples of usage of the word redite.
