Saying some in French (ctd 2)

Continuing with our exercises on using du, de la and des, we just need to add a couple of minor complications in this final exercise.

As before, we'll be using a few "introduction phrases" to make sentences, but our list will now be as follows:

je veux... I want...
j'ai... I've got...
on a... we've got...
il y a... there's..., there are...
j'ai besoin de... I need...
on a besoin de... we need...

As mentioned in our introduction to saying some in French, the phrase besoin de, which already ends in de, doesn't then require du, de la, or des (which are themselves based on the word de).

Then the other complication we'll introduce here is that words beginning with a vowel use a special version of the phrase for some. With French words that start with a, e, i, o or u, instead of du or de la, the form used is de l'. For example, some water is de l'eau. In this case, it doesn't matter whether the word is masculine or feminine.

If you have the phrase besoin de and the following word begins with a vowel, then de changes to d'. For example, I need some water is j'ai besoin d'eau.
